SCIENCE & FAITH IN THE SECOND CITY
About Our Events
Many people hold the view that science and the Christian faith have nothing to say to each other. In fact, some hold that science has ‘killed’ God, so making the Christian faith irrelevant to we who live in the 21st century. And yet, there is an opposing view. Curiously there are quite a number of high-profile scientists who are practising Christians. Meet some of them here as they speak about a diverse range of subjects where science and Christianity intersect.
These talks were given in Birmingham (UK) during 2022 as part of the Science and Faith in the Second City project which was administered by the charity ChaplaincyPlus and funded by a grant from the Scientists in Congregations project from the University of Durham (UK).
On this website you can access the original talks, group study materials related to each of the talks, biographies of the speakers and links to other websites where the relationship between science and the Christian faith are discussed.
The Science and Faith project is administered by ChaplaincyPlus and the ‘IS FAITH REASONABLE?’ partnership, featuring churches from across Birmingham. We are delighted to be able to bring leading scientific speakers to the second city to dig into the fertile ground that exists in the intersection between science and faith.

Ruth Valerio is an environmentalist, theologian, social activist, and author, and is the Global Advocacy and Influencing Director for Tearfund. She has a theology degree from Cambridge and a doctorate from Kings College London in which she explored the issues of simplicity and consumerism.

Dr. Sharon Dirckx is a senior tutor at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. She has a PhD in brain imaging from the University of Cambridge and has held research positions at the University of Oxford, UK, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, US.

John Swinton is a registered mental health nurse and professor of divinity and religious studies at the University of Aberdeen. He worked as a nurse for sixteen years initially within the field of mental health and latterly within the area of learning disabilities.

Glynn Harrison, MD, is Emeritus Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Bristol, where he was a practicing consultant psychiatrist and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry. He speaks widely on issues of faith and psychology, neuroscience, and psychiatry.

Keith Fox is Professor of Biochemistry at the University of Southampton where he has previously been Head of the Centre for Biological Sciences. His research interests concern DNA structure and its recognition, and he is Senior Executive Editor of Nucleic Acids Research.
